It may seem simple, but your RSVP is an important part of the wedding planning process.
When a couple sends you an invitation, they are setting aside a place for you at their celebration. Your response helps them know exactly how many guests to plan for and gives their vendors an accurate final headcount.
What Does RSVP Really Mean?
RSVP comes from the French phrase répondez s’il vous plaît, meaning “please respond.”
In other words, when you receive a wedding invitation with an RSVP request, the couple is asking you to let them know whether or not you will be attending.
And yes, that means responding even if you cannot attend. A “no” is much easier for a couple to plan around than no response.
If You Say “Yes,” Please Make Every Effort to Attend
Once you RSVP that you will be attending, the couple is likely counting you as part of their final guest count.
That number can affect everything from the number of meals ordered to the number of chairs and tables arranged. Many wedding expenses are based directly on the number of guests.
Of course, life happens. Illness, emergencies, travel issues, and unexpected circumstances can arise. If something changes and you can no longer attend, let the couple know as soon as possible.
A quick message or phone call allows them to update their plans and, when possible, adjust their arrangements.
What About Bringing a Guest?
One of the most important rules of wedding guest etiquette is to follow the invitation.
If your invitation is addressed only to you, don’t assume that you can bring a plus-one. If the invitation specifically includes a guest, then you are welcome to bring the person listed or permitted by the couple.
The same goes for children. If the invitation doesn’t include your children, it’s best to respect the couple’s wishes rather than asking them to make an exception.
Remember, couples often have to make difficult decisions about their guest list based on their venue capacity and budget.
